About Naejangsa Temple historical Background

Naejangsa Temple was originally founded in 636 AD by Buddhist monk Yeongeun during the Baekje Kingdom era, making it one of the older temples in Korea. Over the centuries, the temple faced multiple destructive events. It was burned down during the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century and was again destroyed during the Korean War. Each time, the temple was carefully restored, with the latest major restoration completed in 1971.

Naejangsa Temple is closely associated with the Avatamsaka Sutra, a key Mahayana Buddhist text, and has served as an important meditation site for monks who follow the teachings of the Hwaeom (Flower Garland) School of Buddhism.
