The Tripitaka Koreana was first called the Tripitaka Koreana. However, it later became known as the Tripitaka Koreana, which means the Tripitaka Koreana, because it has 81,340 woodblocks and holds more than 84,000 Buddhist scriptures. All woodblocks, placed from end to end, stretch 37.5 kilometers and weigh 280 tons. The letters are almost the same style as if they were written by one person. It contains more than 1,500 different kinds of Buddhist scriptures that are accurate in the UNESCO World Heritage List. To make woodblocks, tan cherry trees with regular wood patterns and wild pear trees were selected and immersed in sea water for two to three years. The woodblocks were boiled in salt water and dried in the shade. Then the carving began. After the letters were engraved, the surfaces of the woodblocks were painted with three layers of lacquer. Wooden handles were attached on both ends, and the four corners of the plate were decorated with copper sheets to prevent damage from moisture, insects, and twisting.

Tripitaka Koreana, the Most Comprehensive Collection of Buddhist Scriptures

In the 13th century, the people of Goryeo made woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana with Buddhist scriptures engraved on them to defeat Mongolian invaders through spiritual assistance from the Buddha. It is the world's oldest existing Tripitaka Koreana, symbolizing the pinnacle of woodblock printing technology. The building of the Haeinsa Tripitaka Koreana was built as a deposit to store the Tripitaka Koreana in the 15th century. The deposit is the only woodblock archive in the world. With careful calculation, scientifically designed buildings and windows were effectively placed to allow natural ventilation and control temperature and humidity, allowing them to preserve the Tripitaka Koreana for more than 600 years without damage. The excellence of this deposit has been widely acknowledged.
