Dodamsambong Peaks, Danyang

Dodamsambong Peaks, Danyang(단양 도담삼봉 丹陽島潭三峰) is very attraction place in Korea. It is one of the eight scenic views of Danyang, a three-peaked island in the middle of the Namhangang River in Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province. It is a must-see place among eight attractions in Danyang.

Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province, has been selected as one of the top 100 Korean tourism destinations in 2025-2026, confirming its status as an inland tourist destination once again. Dodamsambong was also included in the selection.

Dodamsambong Peaks is famous in Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province, and is one of the Eight Wonderful Views of Danyang. It is an island made up of three rocks in the middle of the Namhan River.

Dodamsambong's unique appearance

The beautiful and amazing scenery of the peaks revealed on the water is popular as a tourist destination.

Dodam is a deep pond formed by a meandering stream of the Namhan River. It has three karst limestone peaks that rise side by side in a conical shape. The highest and largest peak in the center is called Janggunbong, which means general's peak.

The Legend of Dodamsambong

Admired as the best of the Eight Views of Danyang, Dodamsambong has been the subject of numerous poems and paintings since ancient times. Famous writers and artists fascinated by its beautiful scenery include Yi Hwang (1501-1570), a Neo-Confucian philosopher who once served as a governor, Hwang Joon-ryang (1517-1563) and Hong Yi-sang (1549-1615), Kim Jeong-hee (1786-1856), an artist Kim Hong-do (1745-1395), and Yi Bang-woon (1761-1761). The legend of the birth of Jeong Do-jeon (1342-1398), who contributed greatly to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, has been handed down here. Jeong loved it so much that he made Sambong his pen name. 

Dodamsambong Story

There is a story about the birth of Jeong Do-jeon, a founding contributor of the Joseon Dynasty, and Jeong Do-jeon is said to have loved this place to the extent that he called himself Sambong.

Dodamsambong Peak is a conical peak created by the limestone karst landscape, and three peaks consisting of the sedimentary rock formation of the Paleozoic Ordovician period and the Heungwoli layer of the Joseon stratum, stand tall in the deep pond formed by the Namhan River, showing an outstanding view of the Namhan River.

It is said that Jeong Do-jeon, a contributor to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, spent his youth here enough to call his name Sambong. Sambong was originally washed away from Sambong Mountain in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do during the flood and became Dodamsambong, which is now.

There is no fee for admission.

If you go up a small mountain nearby, you can see Dodamsambong Peak from top to bottom.

Parking is easy, Small vehicles & vans (15-person capacity or less) 3,000 won.

Near Dodamsambong Peaks, Yangbaeksan Mountain has an observation deck where you can see the whole of Danyang-gun at a glance and a glide field where you can enjoy paragliding. You can reach the top by car.
