The night view of Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace is one of the top five palaces that were built in Seoul, Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. It is famous for its unique blend of traditional Korean and Western architecture, and has a historical significance.

Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace was originally the residence of Grand Prince Wolsan, the elder brother of King Seongjong (1469-1494). It became a royal palace in 1593, when King Seonjo (1592-1598) fled the palace after the Imjin War (1567-1608). Later, it was renamed Gyeongun Palace, but in 1907 it was renamed Deoksu Palace when Emperor Gojong moved his residence.

The palace played an important role in the transition from the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire. Notably, Emperor Gojong (1863-1907) used the palace as his residence, seeking modernization efforts under the influence of Western countries.

Hello Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace symbolizes the transition from a traditional kingdom to a modern empire. It is the only palace in Seoul with both Korean and Western architectural styles. Once the palace contained a vast area of many buildings, but the current palace site is only a small shadow of its former splendor.

The Royal Guard shift (which is held every day except Mondays) is re-creating traditional Joseon-era military rituals, attracting many visitors.
