Yeosu Hyangiram Hermitage

Hyangiram (向日庵) is a Buddhist hermitage located on the steep coastal cliffs of Geumosan Mountain (金鰲山) in Dolsan-eup, Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. The name "Hyangiram" means "Hermitage Facing the Sun," reflecting its position overlooking the sea toward the rising sun. It was originally founded by Monk Wonhyo (617–686) during the Silla Dynasty and is one of the four major Buddhist sanctuaries dedicated to Avalokitesvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) in Korea.

History of Hyangiram

Hyangiram was initially called Wontongam (圓通庵) but was later renamed Hyangiram, meaning "Hermitage Facing the Sun," during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. It was first established by Monk Wonhyo and later rebuilt by Yunpil Gosa, a Buddhist layman of the Goryeo period.

The hermitage was destroyed by a large fire in 1971 and later restored. Another fire broke out in 2009, but Hyangiram was once again reconstructed, maintaining its traditional architectural layout while incorporating modern restoration techniques.
